AI can find you 100 franchises before you've finished your coffee

That sounds like good news, right?

Ask ChatGPT for the best franchises to own. Give it your budget. Add your preferred industry. Ask for a comparison table. Within minutes, you can have a polished shortlist sitting on your screen.

The research is faster than ever.

The harder part is knowing what to do with all that information.

My wife and I learned that firsthand.

After we exited the insurance business, my wife and I spent months evaluating more than 60 businesses, from independent ventures and startups to franchises. We read, researched, compared and asked questions.

We had plenty of information.

What we needed was better judgment about where to look.

AI can accelerate your research. It cannot decide which business fits your life.

The internet has always given prospective franchise owners access to more information than they could reasonably process. Search “best franchises” and you’ll find rankings, directories, and lists built around investment levels, growth rates, popularity, and other broad criteria.

AI simply makes that process dramatically faster.

And faster isn't always better.

Think about a GPS.

It can calculate hundreds of routes between two points. It can tell you which road is fastest, where traffic is building and when you need to turn.

But first, you have to tell it your destination.

Franchise selection works the same way.

A senior executive leaving corporate America may want to build a management team and create another source of income.

Another buyer may want to become the hands-on operator.

Someone else may want a business that gives them greater control over their schedule.

They can have the same budget and completely different answers.

That’s why I use four filters when helping someone evaluate opportunities:

I’ve seen several successful individuals invest in a quality franchise. It performed well, and for a while, it felt like they had found another promising path.

Eventually, they decided to exit.

The business itself was successful. The challenge was that it simply required more of their time than the life they wanted to build could accommodate. The numbers looked good. The calendar told a different story.  They were building a business while trying to be present for their family, and eventually they realized that a strong business only matters if it also supports the life you want to live.

Those experiences taught me something I still carry with me today: the right business has to fit both your goals and your life.

That is where good guidance earns its value.

A consultant’s role goes beyond helping you find more franchises.

A good consultant helps you recognize the opportunities worth pursuing.

That's what I wish I had understood when we were evaluating those 60-plus opportunities.

I eventually connected with a franchise consultant while researching brands. My first thought was simple:

I wish I knew this service existed years ago.

He introduced me to opportunities that would have been hard to find on my own. More importantly, he helped frame the search around what I was actually looking for.

That experience eventually led me into franchise consulting.

Today, that’s the work I do.

I help people sort through the noise, identify business models that align with their goals, and decide which opportunities deserve serious due diligence.

AI has made information easier to access.

Judgment is still valuable.

Where AI Can Give You an Edge

AI can be incredibly useful in franchise research when you give it the right job.

Use it to:

  • Build better questions. Ask AI to identify the questions you should answer before moving forward with a franchise.

  • Prepare for franchisee calls. Give it what you know about a brand and ask it to turn your research into thoughtful questions for current franchise owners.

  • Organize your research. Use it to compare requirements, models, structure, and other factors across multiple opportunities.

Then bring human judgment into the room.

Because the right franchise for you may not be the one that appears at the top of the search results.

The most important question is no longer sitting inside the algorithm.

It is sitting with you.

Where are you actually trying to go?

If you’re exploring franchise ownership, I can be your human soundboard.

AI can surface patterns. I can help you interpret what those patterns mean for your goals, your experience, your family, your time, and the life you want to build.

Ownership requires judgment, context, honest conversation, and sometimes a second set of eyes from someone willing to challenge your assumptions.
